Position Summary:

The Cancer Service Line Director is a position that will have overall responsibility for the successful development and implementation of detailed plans outlining the operational, strategic, and programmatic aspects of the Cancer Service Lines, as a “Strategic Business Unit” within the Tidelands Health – MUSC affiliation partnership.

Provides strategic and operational leadership in the development of the oncology service line. Ensures that a full continuum of services is created and structured in response to customer needs (patient, payer and physician). Develops quality initiatives and outcomes and creates goals and plans for the service line. Plans, implements, directs, monitors and promotes all cancer treatment related activities and services. Formulates budgets and ensures appropriate profitability and/or revenue maximization for the oncology service line; manages data capture and analysis and monitors oncology outcomes data such. Participates in development of a network-wide system to track and manage oncology related business activities; patient centric programs such as patient navigation and clinical management; physician manpower, positioning, and program alliances. Establishes and maintains long-term positive relationships and collaborations with physicians and specialists who support TH programs and services; establishes collaborative relationships with directors, managers, and departments. Leads system wide initiatives related to performance improvement (revenue, cost, quality and customer satisfaction, patient, physician and employee). Ensures all areas of the service line cooperation and promotes a common vision of excellence. Represents TH in a professional positive manner in the community and to other external agencies. Ensures that the TH cancer program goals and initiatives are consistent with and support the overall mission of TH. Directs management and marketing functions to achieve established clinical, financial and customer service goals. Oversees the management of the Radiation Therapy Center, the Cancer Registry, Infusion Therapy services and directs/supports cancer services and additional locations as the service line expands at TH. The Director will constantly analyze local, regional, and national trends to lead market planning and product enhancement initiatives that result in customer loyalty, and performs other duties as assigned.

The core responsibilities will include:

• Providing administrative leadership for the Cancer Service Lines as part of a Dyad or Triad Leadership model.

• Coordinating and leading the development of regional strategies, growth of the clinical enterprise, network affiliations, as well as the integration of programs internally and in collaboration with MUSC where appropriate.

• Developing and overseeing the quality and performance improvement program for the service lines.

• Lead and participate in LEAN-related activities around Cancer Service Lines.

Specific Responsibilities:

Service Line Oversight / Collaboration with Physicians, Pharmacists, Nursing, GRTC, THG and MUSC as appropriate

• Develop and manage a shared services model that will optimize efficiency while promoting achievement of service line goals.

• Ensure that the service lines meets operating guidelines as may be established by annual Pillar Goals, including but not limited to: patient access, safety, revenue cycle, patient satisfaction, and quality.

• Using benchmarking and relevant market data to develop and deploy appropriate dashboards and other management tools across the service lines.

• Promote patient engagement and ensure a consistently outstanding experience for patients.

• Assuring adequate staffing at all sites of responsibility

Planning and Budgeting:

• Develop and track progress of comprehensive Oncology service line business plans.

• Work with hospital leadership and physicians to develop and manage annual budgets, including volume targets. Gain approval of budgets and initiatives.

• Manage and improve service line activity along key performance metrics for related clinical subspecialties including volume growth, patient satisfaction, access, quality measures, service line profitability, and staff and physician engagement scores.

• Coordinate the clinical programs to ensure that the Service Line goals are achieved.

• Participate in corporate supply chain initiatives to manage the introduction of new technologies and devices in a fiscally responsible manner, balancing our need to advance our clinical quality, our market position and our financial performance.

• Work annually with various departments to identify priorities, including recruitment, budgets, and development of new programs to ensure that planning is coordinated across departments.

Clinical Portfolio Growth:

• Work with hospitals, physician leadership, and business development teams to implement specific strategies for building clinical volume (IP and OP), market share, referrals, and image.

• Work with departments and administrators to develop clinical recruitment plans to meet and/or adjust for volume and financial pro forma on short and long term basis. Update long-term plans annually during budget process.

• Work with physician leaders, nursing leadership, and other clinical and administrative leadership to ensure programmatic growth targets and quality goals are developed and achieved.

Marketing:

• Coordinate the development of annual marketing plan, in collaboration with AVP and marketing staff including internet strategies, consumer and physician marketing strategies, etc.

• Serve as key administrative representative for assisting the marketing department to implement marketing campaigns, community outreach, and other events specifically designed to enhance reputation and build utilization of Cancer services.

• Oversee development and implementation of physician conferences, mailings, meetings, and programs designed to build and maintain relationships with external referring physicians, including coordination of CME and other regional educational events that promote Tidelands Health leadership position in Cancer services.

• Maintain knowledge and awareness of competitive regional environment and develop strategies to further Tidelands Health position in the market.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

• Required: Master’s Degree: MHA or MBA or MSN

• Required: Minimum of 5 years leadership experience in program development, consulting, and/or healthcare administration.

• Preferred: Minimum of 3 years Cancer Service Line development & leadership experience.

• Required: Successful track record of developing effective collaborative relationships with physicians.

Required Skills:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft programs,.

  • Strong organization and multitasking skills required.

  • Pleasant, understanding and patient attitude and the ability to remain composed under stressful circumstances

  • Demonstrated ability to complete work in a timely and efficient manner and ensures work is accurate.

  • Ability to analyze data and build reports with valid metrics

Other:

  • Required to works in a variety of healthcare areas and attend functions throughout the community requiring travel from one destination to another using personal transportation.

  • Ability to primarily work in an enclosed office area required.

  • Manual dexterity required for handling reports, charts, instruments, and equipment.

  • Verbal and written communication and the ability to effectively is essential to the position in order to communicate with staff, patients and their families.

  • Near visual acuity required to work with charts and records and observe patients and staff.

Physical Requirements: Light-Medium While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently (activity or condition exists from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time) required to stand, sit, and walk; frequently to use hands, fingers; and frequently to talk or hear.
