CITY OF CORTEZ Public Works Operator (Streets/Water) in CORTEZ, Colorado

Position: Public Works Operator (Streets/Water)

Duties: Performs manual work in street maintenance and repair, such as trench cuts in streets and repairing pot holes. This includes cutting asphalt with a jack hammer, mixing, pouring, and rolling new asphalt mixture.

Maintains and installs traffic control and information signs and barricades throughout the City. Performs road painting. This includes striping streets, crosswalks, and no-parking areas. Maintains paint machines by thoroughly cleaning and making minor repairs.

Removes snow from streets by plowing or operating the sanding truck. Operates light equipment.

Performs manual work installing water services and main water lines. This includes digging trenches, tapping, installing water lines, filling in holes, and compacting soil. Places water lines in the ground, removes old lines and replaces them with new ones. Compacts holes and patches the street to complete work. Repairs or installs fire hydrants.

Operates heavy equipment such as backhoe and dump trucks. Maintains equipment by performing regular maintenance tasks and reporting deficiencies to supervisor.

Serves as lead person for part-time helpers on assigned jobs to insure proper procedures are followed. Answers citizens' questions and works with them to satisfy complaints.

Skills: Ability to learn how to operate and maintain a variety of hand construction equipment. Ability to learn how to operate single axle trucks; air compressor, boring machine, tapping machine, and back hoe.

Other Requirements: Must be 18 or older due to child labor laws. Possess a valid Colorado Driver's license and be able to obtain a CDL license within 3 months of being hired. Have a high school diploma or equivalent. Ability to pass a drug test and a background check.

Wage: $16.25-$25.70 per hour

Shifts: This is a full time position working Monday through Friday. Will be on call for emergencies.
