Cedar Falls Utilities Electric Journeyman Line Worker in Cedar Falls, Iowa

Overview

CFU is currently recruiting for a full-time Electric Journeyman Line Worker to p erform complex overhead and underground electrical work involved in the construction, maintenance and operation of the electric transmission and distribution systems. This individual will also perform construction and maintenance of overhead and underground cable communications systems. CFU is looking for an individual who is safety-minded and enjoys working in a team environment.

The Electric Journeyman Line Worker works under general supervision of the Electric Construction & Line Supervisor.

Compensation & Benefits

  • CFU offers on-the-job training through an 8-step apprenticeship program, consisting of classroom and field training.

  • Starting wage is based upon individual qualifications. Full position rate is $47.25/hour once a candidate can successfully perform the essential job functions.

  • There will be opportunities to rotate through the Line Crew Leader. Position rate is $51.77/hour when taking on those responsibilities.

  • Work schedule is Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 3:30pm, with two 20 minute breaks. Must be willing to work on-call rotation and overtime when necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Works with electric hot line equipment and tools.

  • Performs line maintenance and emergency work; climbs poles, installs hardware, connects transformer banks, fuses transformers, pulls wires, lays cable and other necessary work.

  • Ties in conductors and changes insulators; works on overhead and underground electric circuits; operates overhead and underground construction and maintenance equipment when necessary.

  • Keeps time and work records.

  • Participates in rotating on-call duty as assigned.

  • Performs tree trimming work and Line Crew Leader duties as assigned.

  • Installs communication conduit, messenger, and cable.

  • Responsible for maintaining a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that promotes positive relations with customers, co-workers and management.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or a vocational school.

  • Satisfactory completion of an approved Apprentice Line Worker program in electrical construction, maintenance and repair work; completion of an approved correspondence course or formal technical training for utility line workers; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the ability to perform the job functions as defined.

    Certifications / Licenses:

  • Required to have good driving record and valid Iowa driver’s license.

  • Must maintain a valid Iowa Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class A.

    Residency:

  • NEW:This position requires an employee to reside within20 milesof the Main Office Building at 1 Utility Parkway, Cedar Falls.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of: Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods, equipment and tools used in the erection, maintenance and repair of electric and communications lines; must possess a basic knowledge of electrical theory; skill in the proper use of line worker’s tools; and a thorough knowledge of occupational hazards connected with the work.

  • Ability to: Cl imb poles and towers, and to perform all aspects of electric transmission and distribution construction and maintenance work; read and understand electrical maps, diagrams, and work procedures and to establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

    Physical Tasks and Environmental Conditions:

  • The physical demands described here are characteristic of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee must occasionally lift at least 75 pounds, be alert to ergonomic hazards and possess the capability to climb ladders and/or stairs. The employee must also be capable of working in conditions with rough terrain and awkward/difficult positions. This job requires a moderate to strenuous activity level. Employee accommodations for physical or mental disabilities will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

    This position requires a hearing exam and a pulmonary lung function test, which is required for respirator use. May be required to be fit-tested for use of a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

    Pre-employment physical and drug test required.
