The University of Colorado Boulder encourages applications for our Executive Director of CU Presents ! The Executive Director is responsible for leadership, coordination, and oversight of CU Presents, which provides integrated marketing, public relations, and box office services for performing arts on the CU Boulder campus. The Executive Director of CU Presents (CUP) reports to the Dean of the College of Music and works closely with CUP partners in Theatre and Dance and the Colorado Shakespeare Festival. In addition, this position serves to advise and collaborate with the College of Music Dean, faculty, and students on artistic programming for the College of Music, which will serve its mission of inspiring artistry and discovery.

CU Presents' portfolio includes events for the College of Music, the Department of Theatre and Dance, and the Colorado Shakespeare Festival. The College of Music has approximately 48 ticketed performances during the academic year, which include the Artist Series, Takacs Quartet, Eklund Opera, Music Theatre, and the Holiday Festival. In support of its academic mission, the College of Music also offers more than 350 non-ticketed events each year, including student concerts and recitals, Faculty Tuesdays, and other special events. The Department of Theatre and Dance has over 50 ticketed nights of show during its academic-year season, and the Colorado Shakespeare Festival has over 60 ticketed nights of show during its summer season.

The individual in this position will be a professional with content expertise in key areas, who advises the Dean of the College of Music and other campus leaders to help achieve the greatest success with performing arts programming on campus. They should be an inspirational team leader who demonstrates a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and access and the ability to build trust and productive working relationships with a wide variety of collaborators, particularly internal colleagues in artistic programming, operations, communications, and advancement. They should bring a problem-solving approach focused on continual improvement and growth, both in outcomes and alignment with mission.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Team leadership and operational oversight

  • Provide leadership to the CU Presents team responsible for the marketing and box office functions for performing arts events on campus, serving as the direct supervisor for the Operations Director and the Director of Marketing & Public Relations, who in turn supervise a team that consists of a Box Office Manager, Box Office Services Coordinator, Senior House Manager, Marketing Manager, Publications Manager, Multimedia & Content Manager, and Student Assistants.

  • Oversee the operational and human resource aspects of CU Presents with an eye toward operational efficiencies, sustainable staff workloads, and high-level customer service for CUP patrons and internal partners.

  • Cultivate a positive, collaborative work culture including a focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and access.

  • Monitor CU Presents budget and finances, in close collaboration with the College of Music finance team. Prepare and analyze reports and comparative data, seeking and sharing insights to inform future decisions.

  • Establish clear organizational goals for the CU Presents team, evaluate progress and support the team in achieving them.

Strategic performing arts presenting and promotion

  • Provide professional expertise in the areas of performing arts programming, ticketing, and marketing, and seek continuous improvement toward standard methodologies in the field. Provide advice and guidance to campus partners regarding these issues.

  • Maintain a "big picture" view of performing arts presentations on campus to include high-level advising of season planning and calendaring and advise the College of Music and other presenting units accordingly.

  • Strive to ensure that the work of CU Presents aligns with the mission of, and serves to benefit, the College of Music, the CUP partners, the broader University, and the Boulder community.

  • Serve as a strategic and forward-thinking leader, oriented toward data-informed decision making, solving problems, and seeking innovative and collaborative solutions.

  • Develop and maintain standards for ticketing and marketing across all customers.

Coordination with colleagues and partners

  • Collaborate closely and build strong working relationships with partners, particularly College of Music leadership, staff in operations and communications, faculty, students, and advisory boards.

  • Build strong working relationships and open ongoing communication pathways with presenting partners (Department of Theatre and Dance and Colorado Shakespeare Festival) and ensure operating agreements with partners are clear, fulfilled, and updated as needed.

  • Provide advocacy and leadership on behalf of CU Presents and its presenting partners by communicating the impacts of campus-level decisions on CU Presents events.

  • Serve as a liaison between CU Boulder and the broader performing arts community in Boulder and the surrounding areas.

Partnership and collaboration with Advancement

  • Build and maintain a "culture of philanthropy" at CU Presents, encouraging team members and others to see the work of CU Presents as directly connected to the fundraising and advancement aims of the University.

  • Build strong working relationships with CU Boulder Advancement staff responsible for the performing arts.

  • Serve as the face of CUP when interacting with donors, fostering strong donor relationships through positive donor interactions.

  • Coordinate closely with existing and new fundraising efforts and lead integration of the ticketing and fundraising systems (donor CRM) to the overall benefit of the University.

What You Should Know

This job is located on the CU Boulder campus, and is predominantly an in-person position, with some potential for hybrid flexibility. The individual in this role may need to be present for evening and weekend events and will occasionally be on-call for immediate issues or problems that arise.

What We Can Offer

The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $110,000 annually. Onboarding assistance is available within department guidelines.

What We Require

  • Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience and education may substitute.

  • Six years of proven leadership in complex operations within an artistic setting that included supervision.

  • Experience with marketing and promotions in the performing arts.

  • Supervisory experience, including team leadership and performance planning and management.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving and solution-seeking approach.

  • Experience and ability in budget management.

  • Familiarity with a constantly evolving technology landscape. Proficiency using cloud collaboration tools, Teams, AI, spreadsheets, data dashboards and other broadly used business technology.

  • Experience developing and implementing practices and procedures to create a positive and productive work culture with a focus on equity, inclusion, and access.

  • Ability to work flexible hours.
