This position exists to provide research, data analysis, and data management support to understand, characterize, mitigate, and manage the human health and environmental risks from releases of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Under the general direction of the MPCA’s PFAS coordinator, with overall project goals and design established by MPCA leadership, the incumbent will support the implementation of Minnesota’s PFAS Blueprint.

This position facilitates and participates in complex, broad-based, and agency-wide research, data management and data analysis projects that support MPCA programs that implement PFAS regulatory and environmental work, including Remediation, Stormwater, Wastewater, Solid Waste, Air, and other programs. The incumbent’s work will support agency monitoring activities, current and future PFAS rulemaking efforts, and evaluating the progress and success of the agency’s PFAS goals.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in an Environmental Science, Engineering, Computer Science, GIS, or other Natural Science; Statistics, Environmental Health, Toxicology or other related degree.

Three (3) years of demonstrated experience conducting research and data analysis and providing or communicating data to both technical and general audiences.

Strong planning and organizational skills to meet priorities, goals and objectives, monitor work, and follow-up on implementation for both independent and team-oriented work.

Ability to communicate complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to a wide range of audiences.

Ability to evaluate and interpret scientific data, reports and literature, particularly to conduct thorough research and review of the validity of data used in model and tool development.

Preferred Qualifications

Understanding of or experience in environmental and regulatory programs, such as remediation, air, water or solid waste permitting, and/or pollution prevention programs.

Understanding of or experience in PFAS environmental and regulatory work.

Experience performing analyses and data visualization using a wide variety of data science (data collection, analysis, processing, evaluation, visualization, etc.) software such as Tableau, SQL, Excel, Python, R or other statistical analysis software.

Ability to produce clear, concise analysis and reports in support of program management and decision making.

Human relation and communication skills sufficient to collaborate, work effectively, and create understanding within a wide range of clientele, partners, and interested parties.

Physical Requirements

Requires occasionally moving such articles as file boxes and heavy hand tools or heavier materials with help from others and/or moving light objects frequently. A job in this category may require maintaining a stationary position to a significant degree or may involve a certain amount of moving necessary in carrying out job duties.

Additional Requirements

Position duties may require travel but driving is not a minimum qualification or essential function of this position. Employees who may drive for state business will need their driver’s license checked prior to operating a state vehicle.
